Dog Pedigree Software

Pedigree software with COI built in.

Build five-generation pedigrees automatically and see Wright’s coefficient of inbreeding for any pairing — before you breed it. No redrawing charts by hand, and it’s free to start.

BreedTools pedigree — a five-generation pedigree chart with linked ancestors and titles, beside the dog's record

A live five-generation pedigree — linked ancestors and titles, built from your kennel automatically.

Pedigrees + COI

Breed by the numbers, not by hope.

Five-generation pedigree charts

Link a dam and sire and BreedTools builds the pedigree automatically — five generations deep, with registration numbers and titles. No more redrawing the chart by hand every litter.

Wright’s COI, calculated for you

BreedTools computes the coefficient of inbreeding (COI) across the pedigree using Wright’s formula — the real number, not a guess — so you can see how related a pairing actually is before you commit to it.

See the COI before you breed

On the litter-planning screen, pick a dam and a sire and the COI preview updates inline. Catch a pairing that doubles up on a common ancestor while it is still just an idea, not a litter on the ground.

Bring your dogs with you

Import your existing dogs and records from CSV — name, breed, DOB, registration, microchip, color — so your pedigrees populate without retyping years of records.

Pedigree FAQ

Pedigree & COI questions.

Is the dog pedigree software free?

Yes. The five-generation pedigree chart and the COI calculator are both on the BreedTools free plan (10 dogs, 1 active litter, no credit card, no trial expiry). You can build pedigrees and check inbreeding coefficients without paying.

What is COI and how is it calculated?

COI (coefficient of inbreeding) is the probability that two copies of a gene are identical by descent — a measure of how inbred a dog or a planned pairing is. BreedTools calculates it with Wright’s formula across the pedigree you have entered. A lower COI generally means more genetic diversity.

How many generations does the pedigree show?

Five generations. The COI calculation traces shared ancestors across the pedigree you have built, so the more complete your dogs’ ancestry, the more accurate the coefficient.

Can I see the COI before I commit to a breeding?

Yes. When you plan a litter you select the dam and sire and the COI preview appears inline — so you evaluate the pairing before it happens, not after.

Can I import my dogs from another program or spreadsheet?

Yes, for free. The import tool accepts CSV and auto-detects common columns (name, breed, sex, DOB, registration, microchip, color). Switch from another pedigree program without re-entering everything.
