How contracts work
BreedTools lets you create a puppy contract, send it to your buyer, and collect a legally-binding electronic signature — all from one place, on any device. Here's the whole flow, start to finish.
You create the contract
Start from a built-in template — pet sale, deposit, stud service, co-ownership, and more. Pick the buyer and the puppy, and the details you already have on file (names, breed, date of birth, registration, parents) prefill the contract for you.
The warranty and health-guarantee sections come pre-loaded with standard language, and they're editable text — adjust any clause to match your program before you send.
You can sign first (optional)
If you want your signature on the contract before the buyer sees it, turn on Require my counter-signature and sign as the breeder. The buyer then sees your signature on the document and counter-signs. This is optional — many breeders skip it for simple sales.
You send it to the buyer
Send it by email straight from the app, or use Copy Signing Link and text the link instead — whichever your buyer actually reads. Either way the buyer gets the same secure signing page.
The buyer reviews and signs
The buyer opens the link on any device — no account or app needed. They can read the full contract but can't change anything. To sign, they type their name, and the signature is recorded with a timestamp.
The contract is then marked signed, and both you and the buyer can download the signed PDF for your records. If you've uploaded a kennel logo in Settings, the signing page and the PDF both carry your letterhead.
Using your own PDF instead
If you already have a contract — say, one your attorney drafted — you can upload it as a PDF and collect the same electronic signature on it. One important difference: uploaded PDFs are signed exactly as-is. A scanned or exported PDF is just a picture of a document — it has no real form fields — so the app can't fill in buyer or puppy details for you. Your buyer reviews your exact document and signs it, and the signed copy adds a signature-certificate page.
If you want the automatic prefill, use a built-in template instead — every clause stays editable, so you can paste your own wording into it once and reuse it.
Reusing a contract for the next sale
Once a contract reads the way you want, use Save as template on the contract page. Your next sale starts from that template with all your wording pre-loaded — you just pick the new buyer and puppy.
Good to know
- Signed contracts are archived as immutable PDFs with a tamper-evidence hash, so what was signed stays exactly what was signed.
- Signing links are unique per contract and expire — you can reissue a fresh link anytime from the contract page.
- Templates are a starting point, not legal advice. For high-value placements or anything you're unsure about, have an attorney review before signing.
